Old Age and Happiness

Never thought I would be feeling old, but on occasion I do now.  I think there are 3 important things to do to stay happy as you are growing old.

1- treat every day as a gift.  2- strong self discipline regarding exercise & diet.  3- keep an adventerous spirit.

Treat every day as a gift.  First off there aren’t that many more days left, so squandering one is a bad idea.  But more importantly it is so easy as you get older to view things cynically and to remember old wrongs or to be bitter about something that happened yesterday.  Blow those bad thoughts away, they don’t matter and they will just drag you down.  View your glass as half full, not half empty.  Let disappointments and problems bounce off… they are not worth the worry… who cares what other people think of you?  So start every day with a resolution to laugh often and love much!

Strong self discipline.  When you are young, your body is so forgiving of abuse.  It bounces back quickly from almost anything you throw at it.  It also helps that you are growing and burning up calories like mad.  As you age, your body becomes less forgiving & a few extra calories become fat instead of another inch of height.  Eating less and exercising more is often the toughest tasks of the day.  No one but yourself to provide motivation & somehow it seems like the smallest slip up, has big penalties.  For me, a key part of maintaining this discipline is to get on the scale every morning.  Seeing the feedback on my weight every day is a real motivator.  Yes I can feel it.  Yes I can notice when my belt is tight.  But nothing is quite a stark as having those numbers flash in my face.  My biggest struggles come when I stop getting on the scale.

Spirit of Adventure.  It is so comfortable to continue doing what you have always done.  See the same people, use the same tools, go the same things, etc…  It is scary to try new things.  As a youngster most things are new & so experimenting and exposure to new things is very natural.  As you age, you have experienced many things, your tastes are pretty clear… so you tend to do the same things & get comfortable with this stable world.  But that is a sure way to an unhappy life.  Adventure doesn’t mean expensive or exotic things.  It means trying new computer applications.  It means trying new ways to travel or reaching out to make new friends.  But the first step is to say that adventure is good for you and to seek out the road you have not traveled before.  To find people that are different from you or disagree with you.  Keep reaching out to expand your world… because if your world is not expanding it is shrinking.

So happiness is there for the taking, but it takes more effort as you get older.  Following these 3 steps should do a lot to put you on the road to enjoying your advancing age… not to mention thinking about your age even less.

Thoughts to Improve the NBA playoff format

Well, now that the Blazers are out of the NBA playoffs, I can stop thinking about my team and turn to the bigger picture… the overall format of the NBA playoffs.  4 rounds of best of 7 game series is no way to find a champion… if for no other reason than it extends the season into June… at which point does anyone outside of the two cities involved really care any more?  For an exciting, fast paced game to have a playoff system that moves at a glacial pace is crazy.  Secondly, the best of 7 series leads to a slower paced, grind it out type of game.  Little risk taking, just wear down your opponent.

For the record, my oldest son likes the current system & sees it as a chance to really watch various 1×1 match ups evolve given the deeper understanding of strengths and weaknesses.  That is probably true, but I don’t think it offsets the general boredom brought on by the slow pace of progress to a championship game and the grinding style of play.

Here is my proposal:

The core playoff would be a double elimination bracket.  With the final 2 teams playing a best of 3 game series for the championship.

The playoffs would start just as they do today & that becomes the winners’ bracket.  Home court advantage is determined in the same way as today.  Each round is a single game with the winner moving on and the loser dropping to the losers’ bracket.

In the losers bracket, which mirrors the structure of the winners’ bracket, home court advantage goes to the team that joined the losers’ bracket last.  If both teams joined in the same round, then home court advantage is determined in the same way as today.  By giving the home court to the team that arrives last, it puts a premium on staying in the winners bracket for as long as possible.  A second reason for staying in the winners’ bracket is that a team that gets to the championship through the losers’ bracket will have played 50% more games than the team that won the winners’ bracket.  One other thing about the losers’ bracket, after the first round, teams would enter on the opposite side of the bracket compared to their location in the winners’ bracket.  This ensures that teams that met in the winners’ bracket will not meet again in the losers’ bracket unless they are the last teams standing.  Once again, each round is a single game, the winner moving on with the loser dropping out of the playoffs.

I would continue the double elimination format into the meetings between the East and West conferences.  Until from all 16 teams from both conferences you are left with 2 teams… one that is undefeated and one that has one loss.  These two teams will then play a best of 3 game series for the championship with the team that went undefeated in the playoffs holding the home court advantage.  This format would mean that the championship series could be between two teams from the same conference.

Now in my opinion… that would lead to an exciting playoff.  Not to mention one that would be done by the end of April.
